Scheme for Young Scientists & Technologist (SYST)

The scheme is focused on young scientists & technologist who have adequate background and training in fields of science and technology and show inclination to undertake socially relevant action research projects. This is also to encourage academic institutions, national labs and other S&T institutions (including voluntary organizations) to develop societal projects involving young scientists & technologist. The project proposals must show an active association with a field agency in regard to implementation of the project irrespective of the fact whether the candidate is attached to an educational institution or R&D institution or any other agency

Objectives:
To provide opportunities to young scientists & technologist for pursuing innovative research ideas which have direct bearing on societal problems as well as visible technology transfer component.
To provide opportunities for interaction and exchange of ideas with scientific community
To involve young scientists in S&T development process with inputs of S & T through internships in selected NGOs.
To take up activities which are conducive to attainment of the above objectives
Eligibility Conditions:

Age: - The scheme is open for young scientists & technologist, upper age limit being 35 years (40 years in case of women, SC/ST/OBC and physically handicapped candidates) and having a minimum qualification of graduation in Engineering/Medicine or Post graduation/Ph.D. in Science. The scheme is focused on young scientists & technologist who have adequate background and training in fields of science and technology and show inclination to undertake socially relevant action research projects.

It is open for those young scientists/technologists who have not undertaken any major projects independently. No change of PI/change of project area is permitted, however in case of PI resigns; the forwarding officer of host institute would have the responsibility to complete the project.

Note:

Under this scheme, the upper limit for duration of the project is 2 years. The period may be extended to the third year in exceptional cases, if recommended by experts during periodic reviews. Young scientists & technologist not drawing any fellowship/salary are eligible for a consolidated monthly stipend apart from grants for travel, contingency, consumables, minor equipments and for hiring field staff. The institute that hosts the project on approval gets a part of project grant as overheads.
